Acceptance and Commitment:
Aims to improve psychological flexibility. Helps to embraces thoughts and feelings rather than judge them. Identify core values in life, and embracing thoughts and feelings without judgment. Learn to take steps towards goals despite challenges.
Humanistic:
Emphasizes self discovery and personal growth. Aims to redirect thoughts towards positive attributes rather than negative ones. Focuses on the present moment to help foster change and learn to take accountability.
Cognitive behavioral therapy:
Learn to identify and reframe automatic negative thoughts. Redirect harmful behaviors. Allow for increased engagement in meaningful activities. Explores safety and trust and establish firmer boundaries.
DBT
Learning to stay present and aware without judgement or shame. Surviving crises without making them worse. Understanding patterns of negative behavior and managing intense emotions. Maintaining healthy relationships and asserting needs more effectively.
Working with Children and Teens:
Using creative and experiential tools can be more beneficial for this population. Engaging in art therapy exercises to ensure safety and build trust when discussing overwhelming emotions. Using music or play therapy to connect with emotions and express needs in a safe place. Engaging in writing exercises to help promote expression and explore thoughts without fear of judgement.
